Detecting 1.6 mm Diameter Holes in a Pipe Using VOLTA 2 with MRUT-SH Technique

February 3, 2025

For this inspection, a 5" OD pipe with a 0.380" wall thickness was used. The pipe contained several 1.6 mm (0.06") diameter holes distributed along its length.

Hole size compared to a key.

The first hole was located 2.6' away, while the farthest hole was at a distance of 5.3'. The test was conducted using guided waves with MRUT-SH technique VOLTA 2 successfully detected the holes clearly, despite their challenging locations.

Learn more about the MRUT-SH technique:

The MRUT-SH technique is a guided waves technique that uses Shear Horizontal (SH) waves to generate ultrasonic scans. The SH waves are generated with magnetostrictive force, with the application of magnetostrictive strip (MS Strip). As one sensor is utilized for both transmitter and receiver (i.e. Pulse-Echo mode), the sensor will detect reflections from defects along the material.
